Our History
In 1993, the Education Committee of the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill identified a need for educational programs beyond the traditional classroom. By 1994, they launched a pilot program to teach English, starting with their Haitian employees at the Dominican Convent. They also reached out to the local Latino community, building a strong foundation of trust. In February 1997, One to One Learning was officially up and running, thanks to a ministry grant from the Dominican Sisters of Sparkill and a special project grant that provided essential start-up funds. Sister Cecilia La Pietra stepped in as the dedicated director, guiding the program with passion and vision.
We celebrated our 25th Anniversary in 2021-2022, proud to have served thousands of students. Our diverse classes widen job options and prepare students for the ever-changing requirements of today's workforce. We offer courses from beginner to advanced English, pre-GED (high school equivalency), citizenship, literacy, and pre-literacy. Additionally, we help students refine their career skills with classes in basic computer skills, internet use, word processing, spreadsheets, and keyboarding. At One to One Learning, we are committed to empowering individuals through education, fostering a supportive community, and opening doors to new opportunities.
