Irma Vasquez came to the United States in 1995. Her husband, Carlos had come in 1987; their son Efrain in 2000. Their youngest son, Diego was born here. In 2004 Irma began studying at One to One Learning in the beginner level with very little English. She continued for awhile but life happened with children, work, and other responsibilities. Irma stopped studying for awhile but with the English she had learned, speaking with her children, and practice in daily living situations, her English improved. Upon returning to class, Irma’s English speaking was good but she wanted to improve her written English. The class for her was in the literacy level with Sister Nancy. Around this time, Irma had acquired her proof of residency and was aspiring toward citizenship. The literacy class was good since a part of the citizenship test is to write two sentences from dictation. Irma joined the citizenship class at One to One and began studying the history of the United States. At the end of March 2016 Irma passed her citizenship interview and so did her son Efrain. We congratulate both of them. One to One Learning proudly honors Irma Vasquez with the 2016 Student Award for her long journey of learning English and reaching her goal of becoming a citizen of the United States.
